Introducing our Hero Supplier “BetterYou” – Using Ocean Plastic

The Better Planet Project

The Better Planet Project

The Better Planet Project is an environmental project that focuses on targeting all aspects of our environmental footprint, including the initiatives of our suppliers, growers and retail partners. This includes the avoidance of pesticides and harmful chemicals on our partner farms as well as ensuring environmentally sensitive transport and packaging.

Improving the environmental impact of product packaging is of paramount importance and involves many elements including the public and commercial recycling technical ability (as well as the intentions) of the authorities. BetterYou continues to lobby governments to expand their recycling policies and importantly to ensure better communication of these to all.

We are adopting environmental firsts within our industry, and the world.

We hope that our actions will become a catalyst for change within our industry, encouraging other brand owners to commit to using more environmentally responsible packaging and to take initiatives to ensure the potential for a better planet.

Changing our world

There is actually no problem with plastic itself. Plastic is fundamental to the packaging of a vast number of essential medical and health products. It is durable and can be economic to produce and transport. The problem occurs when;

  • plastic manufacture contributes to the erosion of our ozone layer through the production of excessive CO2
  • our throwaway lifestyle impacts on our understanding and willingness to recycle and reuse packaging effectively.

Like many brands, in order to dispense our unique formulations, we need to utilise the support of specialist plastic componentry. This is an area of our business that we are becoming increasingly sensitive to, and one that has led us to spend the last 12 months developing a range of recycled and carbon negative plastic packaging that enables us to drastically reduce our impact on the environment.

2019 saw our total and absolute commitment to utilising 100% recycled or carbon negative plastic – all 100% recyclable, across our entire product range.

Ocean Waste Plastic

BetterYou is one of the first companies in the world to utilise 100% recycled, ocean-recovered and consumer kerbside plastic packaging for an entire commercial product range.

Cleaning our oceans

It is estimated that 12.7[1] million tonnes of plastic enters our rivers and oceans every year. BetterYou bottles and pump sprays utilise recycled plastic collected from our oceans and shoreline.

Recycling our kerbside waste

BetterYou packaging utilises plastic recycled from UK kerbside waste collection—the plastic waste you recycle every week.

Plant-based plastic

BetterYou is committed to the long-term future of environmentally positive plastic production. BetterYou’s plant-based plastic initiative utilises sugarcane as an ethanol source rather than fossil fuels. This plastic production is carbon negative and better for our environment, with more carbon dioxide absorbed during the growth period than is expensed in its production and transport.

BetterYou is one of the first companies in the world to utilise plant-based plastic packaging for an entire commercial product range.

Sustainable paper and card

All BetterYou paper and card is produced from 100% guaranteed sustainable UK forest sources.

The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) mark is your guarantee that the paper you are holding comes from responsibly managed forests. FSC certified forest operations must meet demanding environmental, social and economic requirements, as confirmed by an independent inspection, such as the Soil Association.

This is what makes the FSC system unique and ensures that forests are well-managed from the protection of indigenous people’s rights to the methods of felling trees. Only forests that meet these strict standards are given FSC certification and BetterYou only utilises paper and card allowed to carry the FSC label.
